From despair to joy

“He’s dead. Take him to be buried.”

This was the witch doctor’s message to the family and friends of the man whose limp body lay in front of them. The sound of wailing filled the air as they carried him away. The man, a village leader, had been brought to the witch doctor in a seriously ill condition a few days before. Now he had lost his battle for life.

Or so it seemed.

Suddenly, one villager had a thought. “Why don’t we take him to City of Hope?” he said. “Maybe they can do something to help.”

The suggestion seemed pointless to the crowd of villagers, but they agreed anyway. After all, there was nothing to lose. They could always bury their friend soon afterwards.

And so it was that the despairing gaggle of villagers made their way to Amani Medical Center, carrying the motionless body with them. Our doctors quickly checked the man as soon as they arrived.

And, incredibly, they found a pulse - very faint, very weak, but a pulse nonetheless. Yet there was almost no time left. The team of doctors and nurses immediately got to work.

This man could have been buried in the ground, but he is now living.
We praise God!

City of Hope Director, Hudson Mahare, picks up the story: “Our staff tended him, treated him, and revived him - to the amazement of the entire community. To them, a dead man had been brought back to life by the City of Hope doctors. This man could have been buried in the ground, but he is now living. We praise God!”

Join us in thanking God for this extraordinary opportunity to shine His light into this community. Praise God that the man is recovering well. And pray that, through this event, he and others would recognize the amazing offer of life - for eternity - that is open to them through Jesus Christ!
